Too many links can be a bad thing

Too many links can be a bad thing

Years ago SEO consultants would always advise website owners that if they wanted to get their site ranked then they needed lots of links. This then prompted site owners to build as many links as possible with very little regard for where they came from or how many they got from an individual source.

In recent times Google has been cracking down on unnatural links and getting those unnatural links will more likely lead to your site dropping in the rankings rather than improving.

If you are serious about improving your rankings then I would advise taking the following actions;

1) Get your on page SEO right. This means having an appropriate Title, Description, H1, H2's etc.
2) Have good, appropriate content on your home page. Don't over stuff the keywords that you are focusing on and keep the language natural.
3) Write plenty of good quality content for your site.
4) Try to acquire good quality links naturally. Remember, more is not necessarily better.

There is no ideal number of links. If you have one or two high quality links then this could have a positive impact on your rankings. You have to look at each website on an individual basis.

So, where should I start with links? Can you really do that much damage.

Links can be quite dangerous if they are unnatural. I would suggest talking to an SEO professional before doing any link building.
